Colony Team ®
Meet the creators
from the game COLÔNIA®

Jose Guilherme Prado Martin
Professor (Department of Microbiology at UFV) and research coordinator
A fermenter by passion and profession, I have coordinated research projects on food and beverage fermentation at the Laboratory of Microbiology of Fermented Products (FERMICRO), Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). In my projects, I seek to understand how bacteria and fungi convert simple ingredients into products as tasty as fermented ones. Executing the "Colônia" board game project was a complex task, as translating scientific knowledge into a playful and educational tool is always quite challenging - but all the effort was worth it! Want to ferment with the micro-heroes of Colônia?

Jonas Silva Teixeira
Game researcher and developer
As a PhD student in the Graduate Program in Agricultural Microbiology at UFV, I had the honor of participating in the Colônia project. This experience was innovative for both our Program and us, the creators. Based on knowledge about the microbiology of food fermentation, we sought to build a tool that allows players to take a true journey through the complex world of fermentation, using a playful and engaging language. I hope that the game Colônia will be able to generate engagement and instigate interest in food fermentation among young people and adults!

Paulo Prates Junior
Professor of Biology (Center for Technological Innovation – CIT, IFRO)
I am a biologist from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), where I discovered the beauty of tiny protozoa. At the Bahian Agricultural Development Company (EBDA), I learned about microorganisms that cause diseases in plants, known as phytopathogens. When I arrived at UFV, I fell in love with mycorrhizal fungi and other beneficial microorganisms, many of which are capable of producing delicious fermented foods. The Colônia game is a delightful celebration that combined and divided efforts to popularize science and democratize access to scientific knowledge. Fermenting is a must – and having fun, too!

Alan Cesar Belo Angeluci
Professor - School of Communications and Arts (University of São Paulo)
A trained journalist and researcher of the dynamics of digital communication, I investigate social and cultural relations in the connected environment. My interest lies in understanding how people interact, communicate and find new forms of entertainment. Thinking about a physical game was an intriguing challenge that made me reflect on how to activate playful strategies through the mechanisms of game design. After all, translating concepts into engaging experiences is always a fascinating exercise - and that was exactly what motivated me on this journey!
